The Projects Working Group
The Projects working group has been formed with a charter to organize and lead
these technical activities on behalf of MaineJug.org management:
- It sets policies for integrating new apps into the MaineJug site
- It collects user-group suggestions for new MaineJug Java apps
- It solicits private Java applications aiding user-group management
- It solicits and aids volunteers who independently create Java apps
Our Projects web page declares current goals. Our
members-only
Mailing List is a major aid. Our overall mission, as envisioned today,
is to realize
these potential benefits of a working group focused on building Java Applications:
-
Centrally tracks and aids MaineJug-approved "Java App" projects
-
Helps Jug members learn the latest Servlet specs & coding techniques
-
Offers an early testbed for suggested working group policies
-
Creates "a lively focal point" for Maine's Java Programming Community
-
Projects can serve as Java training aids for doers and observers
-
They help promote Java as a language and show off what it can do
-
Longer term: Aid migrating our JugSite and Projects pages onto other hosts
-
Not just better code portability, but good PR to aid future growth
-
Attract offers of new hardware, tools, DBs, search engine; expertise
-
Industry aid from big firms who'd like Maine to be a Java showcase
-
And of course, we'll exchange ideas, meet nice new people, and have fun!!

Policy Note: On 10/31/01 Dan, Donna, Jason, David, Craig, and Jeff met and
approved a name change for the group, which had been "Web Apps". It now subsumes
the old Jug Site and EJB/DB project areas as well. The co-chairs cited above
lead the group, and each spearheads a set of related projects within one area.
Policy Note: On 5/17/01 Dan, Donna, Jason, and David met and approved the charter
and goals above without dissent. Open source code will be encouraged, not required.
We will address Web Apps ONLY, but look forward to aiding other JUG working groups.
Unless JUG management directs otherwise, control of each Project falls to its
volunteer Project leader, who in exchange MUST take responsibility for keeping
the entire JUG informed of progress by posting reports at least monthly.
